Nantucket: Day Two

This day was a little stormy and rainy. This didn't stop the Scarff party wagon to live it up on the island.

Good morning, Bob! Mostly wanted to post this pic so you could see the hydrangea bushes in the background. These were everywhere. The were beginning to dry out because that's what they do in the fall, but they were still gorgeous. I can't even imagine how there are all summer when they are in full bloom. Definitely a favorite flower of mine, after peonies, before roses, I'd estimate. (file that way in fun facts about Alexis. jk.)

Here's the backyard.

As we were walking into town I realized that the house we were staying in was on Jefferson Street. A coincidence? I don't think so. I think it was a God moment. Jefferson is the name of the baby my parents had that passed after only a month. My older brother. I called my mom and told her that we were staying on Jefferson Street. We're thinking of you Jefferson. God, thank you for sending my parents their angel, Jefferson.

On a lighter note, here Robert and I are at a little look out point in Nantucket. Quite scenic.

Freshness is so key when it comes to seafood. I imagine I'd eat a lot more of it if I could be guaranteed that it had been alive just a day before. That's what this market does.

The lobster tank at the seafood market. Boney was commenting about how lobsters are just hanging out at the bottom of the ocean and they see this cage, they go to check it out and they get caught. Then they get to hang out in a salt water tub with some of their friends and they probably think, "hmm, this isn't so bad." Then someone buys them and sticks them in boiling water. Poor guys. Hope they're living it up during their last hours in their warm bath.

Since it was storming this day and it was pretty chilly outside, we thought it would be a perfect opportunity to go to Cisco Brewers. We each got a flight of beer, which means we got to try 10 different beers in these little beer mugs. And you get to keep the beer mug...yay for being a tourist! The beers ranged from the light and fruity, to dark, to pumpkin and even to a sour beer (yuck). It was really fun to try all the beers.

Cheers!

Robert's favorite is the Whale's Tale Pale Ale, described by the website as: An amber English style beer that has a nice balance between hops and malt. It's the most popular of their beers and the most versatile in terms of pairing with food and people. Check out on their website where you can get it if you're into the whole beer thing.

After the beer tasting we went down the road to Bartlett's Farm Market. They also had flowers and PUMPKINS! I don't know why but I get so happy about pumpkins. It was also a grocery store with amazing produce, breads and other treats.

Teri and I used the restroom at Bartlett farms and this sign was hanging up. We found it amusing that they included "socks" in that list. Really, do you have a problem with people flushing socks down your toilets?

We went to go look at the Atlantic after the market. The ocean is usually very calm in Nantucket, but it was stormy that day and the sea was angry. Angry, but still so beautiful.

After our action packed afternoon, we came home and got ready for dinner at Straight Wharf. A lady in a gallery, whose husband is from San Antonio, told Teri and I that is was the best on the island. Her daughter had her rehearsal dinner there. We took her advice and tried it out. I had a delicious carrot soup that was poured over lobster with bourbon soaked cranberries and toasted hazelnuts. I also ordered a gnocci with mushrooms that was just mehhhhh. Robert ordered a Clam Bake, which had lobster and clams.

Robert said that his Clam Bake had the "flavors of the sea" - which made Teri and I die laughing because he was so serious about it. To which he responded, "I can't say anything in front of you two." Earlier that day we were walking in and out of shops and we came up with a game where Robert had to pick out an article of clothing that he was sure that I would like that his mom would like. He was doing really well. He knows our styles. Then he pulled out a dress that was cream on the top and black on the bottom and said, "I feel like this look has been done to death." Dead serious. We couldn't even breathe we were laughing so hard. Robert - the new Rachel Zoe.

Here we are in front of Straight Wharf. Another end to a great night. We also stopped for ice cream on the way home. I got mint chocolate chip cookie dough. Delish! Thus, concludes Day Two.
